Embracing the stay-at-home lifestyle

Saturday, July 29th, 2006

Dear Internet,

The little baby guarantees that I’m not going to get out of the house much this fall. If I’m going to stay inside, I may as well have a good television. My current TV dates from the early nineties, and apparently there’s been an advance or two in the last few years.

Any suggestions on things to look for when picking out a new TV?

Also, I’m thinking of DirectTV for the NFL Sunday Ticket. Anyone have any experience with them? I have zero allegiance to Comcast, but I want to make sure that I won’t have other problems with the satellite.

Thanks,
Jason

We have Dish; pretty reliable and responsive; DirectTV is their main competitor and I’ve heard they’re pretty good on the customer support side. One tip would be to thoroughly read through their contract agreement and make sure you can get out of it without any strings attached, if things go badly either service or support wise (sounds familiar with regard to our past conversations on ISPs, eh :) . Dish offers a no bar, get out and return the equip within 12 days thing which was a big deal in regard to going with them. They both make a lot of promises to not raise fees like the cable companies but that’s a load of cr*p, because they jack this and that just like everyone else, after they have you for a while.

Football +HiDef TV = unbelievable. neighbors have a 55″ black screen (latest tech following plasma) and the plays burst off the screen. You’ll pay more but if you’re going to be home alot, AND you make the big bucks, why not? Thing is you can definitely get a good deal on a old style tube TV for about 1/3 the cost. our early 90s RCA bit the dust shortly after moving and the black screens were just coming out. I looked at Plasma, but for the same screen width, I bought a Sony WEGA tube 32″ with great sound for $550 v. the same width plasma I was looking for would have been $1,700.
